Bruce Backus is the assistant vice chancellor of environmental health and safety at Washington University in St. Louis and he has been in the position since 2003.  From 1998 to 2003, he was the director of environmental health and safety at Washington University School of Medicine, and from 1988 to 1998, he was the director of the environmental management facility, environmental compliance officer and the assistant director of environmental health and safety at the University of Minnesota.

He has served in various national environmental leadership capacities, including:

  • Current co-chair of the Greater St. Louis EHS Roundtable
  • Past president and past executive board member of the Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA), www.cshema.org
  • Chair, U.S. EPA Colleges and Universities Sector Coordinating Committee
  • Member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Workgroup on Consensus Best Management Practices for Hazardous Waste Management in Research Institutions
  • Member of the National Institutes of Health Regulatory Burden Focus Group, Hazardous Waste
  • Reviewer for the National Academy of Science (NAS) - National Research Council’s Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology 2011 report: “Prudent Practices in the Laboratory: Handling and Management of Chemical Hazards,” and past consultant on the National Research Council's Committee rewrite of “Prudent Practices in the Laboratory, Handling and Disposal of Chemicals” (National Academy Press, 1995), a standard referenced in OSHA's Laboratory Standard 1910.145

He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including:

  • Minnesota Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence and Pollution Prevention
  • U.S. EPA recognition for outstanding leadership, contribution and commitment to a sustainable future for colleges and universities 

Mr. Backus is an author and lecturer on safety, regulatory compliance and improving environmental performance. He served as an adjunct instructor in the department of chemical engineering and materials science at the University of Minnesota. He has a master of science (MS) in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota, a master of business administration (MBA) from Washington University in St. Louis, and a bachelor of arts (BA) in chemistry from Macalester College. He is a registered professional engineer (PE) in chemical engineering.
