Biological & Chemical Safety Laboratory Inspections

All research laboratories are inspected on an annual basis by Health & Safety Professionals within Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S).  The items covered during these inspections are available as a checklist here; explanations for each of the inspection items are available here.  Each item on the inspection checklist has been given a point value ranging from 1 to 3 and the lab must achieve 90% or higher to pass the inspection.  Certain items have been designated as Critical Safety and Compliance Factors, or “Deal Breakers”, and a deficiency in any of these items results in an automatic failure of the laboratory inspection.  Any laboratories that fail their initial inspection will be revisited within two months to verify that deficiencies have been corrected.

Health & Safety Professionals are assigned laboratory inspection duties by building.  You can find the contact for your lab through the “Contacts and Services” menu on the left-hand side of this page.

Biological & Chemical Safety Clinic Inspections

Clinical areas are inspected every six months by Health & Safety Professionals within Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S).  The items covered during these inspections are available as a checklist here; explanations for each of the inspection items are available here.  Each item on the inspection checklist has been given a point value ranging from 1 to 3 and the clinic must achieve 90% or higher to pass the inspection.
