Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Quick Reference Guide

Disclaimer: Recreational use of sUAS is prohibited on  Washington University in St. Louis owned property.

 WUSTL Faculty and Staff:

 STEP I: Obtain FAA Remote Pilot Certificate

  • To obtain remote pilot certification:
    • Contact the testing service center at 1-800-211-2754 to register for remote pilot exam
    • After registering for the exam, contact the testing center to schedule exam at 314-845-8378

STEP II: Register Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) under the FAA part 107 through the FAA registration site.

STEP III: Complete the WUSTL sUAS “Drone” Use Application prior to drone operation.

STEP IV: In addition to steps 1-3, Medical Campus sUAS “Drone” operation requires the following:

  • Contacting at least 72 hours prior to flight:
    • Emergency Department Communications Center:  314-362-9104
    • WUSM Protective Services: 314-362-4357
  • Submit an FAA NOTAM (Notices to Airmen)

 Third Party sUAS “Drone” Request:

 STEP I: Complete the WUSTL sUAS “Drone” Use Application prior to drone operation.

STEP II: Complete and sign the WUSTL sUAS “Drone” consent form agreement

STEP III: Contact WUSTL Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S):

  • Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S)
    • 314-362-6816 or EHS@wustl.edu

THE OPERATION OF UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS INCLUDING DRONES AND MODEL AIRCRAFT ON WU OWNED PROPERTY IS REGULATED BY THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA) PART 107 AND RELEVANT STATE LAW. VIOLATIONS OF THIS POLICY WILL BE HANDLED BY THE RESPECTIVE JUDICIAL OR PERFORMANCE REVIEW BOARDS FOR FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS, BEING THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON TENURE AND ACADEMIC FREEDOM, HUMAN RESOURCES, AND THE OFFICE OF STUDENT CONDUCT, RESPECTIVELY. VIOLATIONS RESULTING IN A FATALITY OR SERIOUS INJURY, OR REPEAT VIOLATIONS, MAY RESULT IN PERFORMANCE SANCTIONS UP TO AND INCLUDING SUSPENSION AND TERMINATION.
